Fave Animal Fur

One of the more interesting jobs I have had was to re-create the last six inches of “Diva The Cat”‘s  tail that was to be chopped off in an episode of the CBS horror show “American Gothic”.

The props master sent me many photos of Diva and two tails to work with – which really made me sad.  I didn’t dare ask how they acquired them.  I consulted with the colour techs at worldSALON and then one Sunday morning dug in.  It was a stressful experience, I had to layer many different tones to get the caramel dimensions in Diva’s tail.  Working from photos had to suffice; Diva had a very powerful agent that did not have her out on appointments for just anyone, especially a “hatchet hairdresser”.

It took a few goes of colouring, drying, and adding more colour – starting light (way too pink) and adding darker pieces as I went along.   In the end (no pun intended) they props master and crew were very happy with the results and after the first camera test, I was told to send along my invoice and I would be paid promptly.

I did not hear if Diva liked it or not, and I never did get to see the actual American Gothic scene, but it was one of those crazy tests of one’s skill that in the end I appreciated.  Ironically, once complete, I jumped on my bike and went to throw axes with friends (Jill, Anthony, Ed …) at #BATL – The Backyard Axe Throwing League at Lakeshore and Cherry St.  I did not win.
